Shimmer Magazine October 95

This has been in my CD player since it arrived. It starts off with your arrival, or could be your departure from a desert island beach, ethereal strings flowing outward from some distant point to guide you, from here it all seemed so natural, "A journey through the harmonious patterns of nature" says the press release, crossing though various cultures without psychically being there. Excellent production is another plus on this little gem. Recommended.

The atmosphere is set with the squawking of seagulls above the shoreline. This soon leads into rising analog synthesizer washes and eventually to a hypnotic percussive beat. This character continues throughout the music as exotic percussion instruments and vocal samples are woven into the mix.

There are also environmental interludes which act as bridges to the changing soundscapes. These come in the form of waves lapping on the beach to the sounds of monkeys chattering in the jungle.

Other aspects of ethnic appropriation are heard with the introduction of prayer chants and spoken passages of dialogue. Exotic instrumentation is also used throughout the works -- from Indian tabla percussion to Oriental stringed instruments.

Although the disc is 20 separate tracks, the music flows as one whole contiguous whole. "Numinous Island" is a well-crafted electronic/world soundscape with enough twists and turns to hold the listeners attention for its hour-long journey.

Silent Records takes us on a cruise to "Numinous Island", a manmade habitat ruled by Susumu Yokota and DJ Ray (known here as Mantaray). This CD is labeled to be filed under "ambient m". This is true since you can describe the pieces as majestic, mellow, meditative. With open mind, good heart, and bright imagination, vividly transport yourself to this island through the rich sounds of "Discovery" and "Messenger of the Gods", or wrap yourself in the royalty of "Ascension." Mantaray is a must.
